Atlantic Sires Stakes Champions Crowned

The champions of the 2012 Atlantic Sires Stakes season were crowned on Sunday afternoon at Red Shores Charlottetown Driving Park during the season-ending Atlantic Breeders Crown.  The Weekend of Champions featured the best two and three-year old pacers and trotters of the Atlantic Sires Stakes season.

Capturing the three-year-old pacing colt championship and the winner’s share of the $24,000 purse was Touch of Lightning under the command of driver Earl Smith.  The pair crossed the finish line in 1:54.4 for Prince Edward Island owners Peter Smith, Donald Smith, Gerald Morrissey and Larry Chappell.

The three-year-old pacing filly crown was awarded to Malabrigo when she and driver Marc Campbell crossed the finish line in 1:57.1 for owner Buntainwood Farm of Brackley Beach, PE.

The title of two-year-old pacing colt of the year went to Untouchable One, which indeed was untouchable in a time of 1:57.4.  Kenny Arsenault was in the bike for this memorable win for the Dooley Boys Racing Stable of Halifax, NS.

The two-year-old pacing filly event went to Carol Alice and driver Clare MacDonald when the duo finished their mile in 1:59.1. The ownership papers are held by Doug ‘Sonny’ Rankin of Sydney, NS, who also does the training on this home-bred filly.

The Sunday afternoon race card also included two Atlantic Breeders Crown trotting invitational events.  Majian Dillon and driver Gilles Barrieau took top place honours in the three-year-old trot event for owner Mary Lea Ripley of Amherst, NS.  Meanwhile the two-year-old trot invitational went to Oceanview Kate, with driver Mike Stevenson in the bike,  for owner William Roloson of Belfast, PE.
