Harness Racing Families Announced for Atlantic Breeders Crown Weekend

Charlottetown, PE – Four Atlantic Canadian harness racing families will be recognized for their longtime contributions to the regional industry during Atlantic Breeders Crown on Thanksgiving weekend.

The Atlantic Breeder’s Crown Host Committee has released the names of the families which will be honored at the ABC awards banquet. The Whelan family, originally from Alberton, Prince Edward Island, the Goguen family of Moncton, New Brunswick, the Walter Deering Family of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Peter MacKinnon family of Sydney, Nova Scotia will be feted.

The four families from each of the Atlantic Provinces will also be saluted with memorabilia on display in the “Memory Lane” room on the second level of the grandstand during Atlantic Breeder’s Crown weekend.

The presentations will be part of the gala awards night on Saturday, October 6th at the Howard Johnston Dutch Inn, Cornwall. The reception will be at 7:00 p.m. with the banquet at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 and available at the Red Shores race office or by calling 1(902)629-6636.

New Feature added to Atlantic Breeders Crown Banquet

Attendees at the Atlantic Breeders Crown Banquet will enjoy a new feature to this year’s event, which will be held Saturday, October 6 at 7 p.m. at the Dutch Inn, Cornwall, P.E.I. Lee Drake, ABC Chair, today announced some very familiar names in Atlantic Harness Racing will share their stories of the early years of the Atlantic Sires Stake races as well as some of their career highlights.

Former CDP track announcer Ed Watters, who called the early years of the ASBA program, and trainer drivers Ralph Annear, Mike Campbell, and Phil Pinkney , all of whom have decades of involvement in the regional stakes program, have agreed to participate in a panel session hosted by event MC’s Vance Cameron and Lee Drake.

“We know our harness racing fans and participants will really enjoy the opportunity to listen to and interact with these four gentlemen, ” stated Mr. Drake. Tickets for the event, which features dinner, award presentations to the owners of horses in the ABC Finals, and recognition to four harness racing families for their significant contribution to the regional industry, are on sale at the Red Shores Race Office or by calling 629-6636.
