Atlantic Breeder’s Crown Weekend In The Books

CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – Atlantic Breeder’s Crown Championship Sunday is a day Adam Merner will never forget.

The Port Morien, N.S., native guided Beaus Cowboy to the biggest win of his career in the $22,000 three-year-old pacing colt final at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park. The three-year-old son of Brandon’s Cowboy used front end dominance through fractions of 28, 57.4 and 1:27 en route to the victory in 1:56.4 over Abner The Great (Driven by Marc Campbell) and Heart And Soul (Clare MacDonald). Ron Gass trains Beaus Cowboy for owner Alex MacPhee of Clyde River.

Campbell had a large day out of his own stable winning two championships. Pappy Go Go used a first-over move to win the $9,000 two-year-old trot final in 2:02.4 over Wicked Nick (Gary Chappell) and BJ Lorado (Brian MacPhee). Pappy Go Go is owned by Grayland Farm of Pugwash, N.S.

The other Campbell training-driving victory came in the $22,000 Atlantic Breeder’s Crown two-year-old pacing filly final with Filly Forty Seven in 1:58.3, fighting off Woodmere Dreams (Gilles Barrieau) and fellow Campbell stablemate Elektra Express (Ryan Ellis). Filly Forty Seven is owned by Darryl MacLean of Winsloe, Katelyn Smallwood of Stratford, Cory Carver of Montague and Tanya Tremblett of Sydney Mines, N.S.

Glencove Zani defended his Breeder’s Crown title, winning the $9,000 three-year-old trot final in 2:01.2 for driver Leonard McGuigan and owner-trainer Edward Smallwood of Stratford. Mr Bower (Kenny Arsenault) finished second with the other Smallwood entry of Oceanview Lefty (Mike McGuigan) finishing third.

It was a career day for trainer Trevor Hicken, as the Montague resident won his first Atlantic Breeder’s Crown final with Tobinator in 1:58. It was one of four wins on the day for driver Corey MacPherson, who was in the bike behind Tobinator for owners Robin Burke of Ten Mile House, Luke Burke of Pleasant Grove, Kent Livingston of Cornwall and Perry Burke of Quebec. Nameisonthehalter (Campbell) was second with Carters Caper (Clare MacDonald) in third.

MacPherson and Hicken added to the day as Big Surf captured the Atlantic Breeder’s Crown Invitational with a front end score in 1:54.4. MacPherson hustled Big Surf to the lead and fought off a first-over D Gs Camme (Barrieau), who finished second by a whisker with Smiley Bayama (Merner) finishing third. Big Surf is also owned by Robin, Luke and Perry Burke.

Clare MacDonald was upset minded with West River Ambyr in the $22,000 three-year-old pacing filly Atlantic Breeder’s Crown final as she sent her trainee to the front from post 3 and was on top at every call for a 15-1 shocker in 1:58.4 over All About Madi (Chappell) and Every Time (MacPherson). MacDonald co-owns West River Ambyr with her daughter Haley MacDonald, both of Antigonish, N.S.

Osprey Impact captured the open trot for MacPherson and trainer-owner Paul Larrabee, Bell River over Freddie and Striking Lindsey.
 
Atlantic Breeders Crown Consolations

The Atlantic Breeder’s Crown consolations were held Saturday afternoon at Red Shores Charlottetown.

Dustlanemissmolly rewrote the history books in her $5,000 three-year-old pacing filly Atlantic Breeder’s Crown consolation race, winning in 1:55 to set a new Charlottetown track record for sophomore fillies. Marc Campbell was in the bike for owner-trainer Jennifer Trainor of Earnescliffe.

It was a dead-heat for win in the three-year-old pacing colts consolation with KD Overdrive (Gilles Barrieau) landing on the line with Silverhill Storm (Jason Hughes) in 1:56.4. Stephen Mason trains KD Overdrive for owner Downey Stables of Quispamsis, N.B., while Hughes trains Silverhill Storm for Donald MacRae of Vernon Bridge.

Pownal Bay Saul won the $5,000 two-year-old pacing colts consolation in 2:00for driver Barrieau, trainer Tom Weatherbie and owner Ian Smith of Charlottetown.

Gold Record scored an upset in the two-year-old pacing filly consolation in 2:00.1 for trainer-driver Bernard McCallum and owner Gordon McCabe of Truro, N.S.

Campbell has three wins on the card, while MacPherson and Barrieau both had driving doubles.
